If you are like me, you will have experienced high cholesterol problems for many years, and been forced to take statin drugs to lower it.

However these days many people including me are seriously looking into the omega3 effect on cholesterol levels. In fact I have been taking fish oil capsules for some years now, which has helped reduce my level further.

Unfortunately my first experience with fish oil capsules was with cheap specials on offer at the local pharmacy, which were virtually ineffective. You see like most people I hadn't done my homework so I didn't understand what was required to make a top quality and effective omega-3 capsule.

I have since learned that omega3 fatty acids when combined and blended correctly in a good quality soft gentle can help to reduce cholesterol levels.

The three most common types of omega-3 fatty acids are DHA, EPA and ALA. The first two are derived from deep-sea oily fish, whilst ALA is common in many vegetable oils particularly flaxseed.

There have been many positive scientific tests and clinical trials conducted over the last few years -- so it's now beyond doubt that regularly intake of fatty acids can help to reduce cholesterol, and are most beneficial in reducing triglycerides and boosting your HDL level.

What's equally important is regular consumption of omega-3 DHA and EPA is very beneficial for your heart health, brain function and various forms of arthritis to mention only a few.

If you're contemplating starting to take fish oil capsules to help with your cholesterol or other health problems it's wise to consult with your doctor before you start. Especially if you have any issues relating to blood pressure or blood clotting.

Taking these capsules is no different from anything else when it comes to quality -- there are good effective brands of omega-3 fish oil and some bad ineffective ones.

Make sure when you're doing your research and evaluation that you look for capsules that contain double the amount of DHA compared to EPA. Scientific and clinical trials have confirmed DHA as being the most complex and beneficial of the three main omega-3 fatty acids.
